Education in the post COVID-19 era

Education in the post COVID-19 era

From the old Gurukula system to the current study from home phase, education has evolved dramatically. It has been a couple of decades since the first computers and internet marked their entry into Indian classrooms. But we yet  have to unveil the tremendous potential that this technology has to offer. In the present scenario of the COVID-19 pandemic, ICT has drastically changed pedagogical approaches across the globe, especially in India. In the pre-COVID times, ICT was more or less optional, but now it has become a necessity, and also one of the best choices.
In midst of all the chaos created by the pandemic, teachers have embraced ICT like never before. The number of online courses offered to equip teachers in this COVID-19 era using ICT has increased. Teachers are now using google classrooms, moodle and various other platforms to impart education to their students. They are now employing various types of audio-visual technologies, virtual classrooms, virtual meetings, podcasts, ...such as OBS, audacity, google meet, zoom, etc. just to name a few.
Of course digital classrooms will never be the same as real classrooms and it comes with its own disadvantages - the biggest challenge being building the student - teacher relationship. The role of teachers is also going to change as they are no longer going to be the only source of knowledge but rather facilitators guiding students in their journey to gain education. Also, digital classrooms are more student-centric when compared to real classrooms which are centered around the teacher. Nevertheless the role of teachers can never be undermined, in fact, it now becomes even more important as the teacher has to make sure that the students are kept interested, engaged and inspired through technology.
The arrival of COVID-19 has surely accelerated digital education in India. However, in these trying times, we still face challenges in terms of accessibility to technology, internet speed in rural areas and definitely financial hiccups. Hopefully these challenges do not overshadow the right to education of citizens belonging to a certain socio-economic strata.  Let the administrators and authorities turn this COVID-19 calamity into an opportunity by creating a revolution in education thus transforming each individual into productive citizens.

How to prepare Hand Sanitizers?

The whole world is currently engaged in the battle against COVID-19 pandemic. Masks, soaps and hand sanitizers are playing a very crucial role in this war against this deadly CORONA virus which has already claimed the lives of over 3 lakh people. In this scenario my first post has to be on the preparation of hand sanitizers. Hand sanitizers come in various forms - as gels, as liquids, as foams, etc. Have you ever thought how hand sanitizers are prepared? I am sure you have. This post will give you the technical know-how on the preparation of hand sanitizers.
Hand Sanitizers are mostly based on alcohol. It can be either ethanol or isopopyl alcohol (also called isopropanol). The following formulation is for the preparation of hand sanitizer based on isopropanol (as it is more easily available than ethanol) according to WHO guidelines. WHO recommends at least 75 % alcohol for the preparation of effective hand sanitizers.

The WHO formulation for preparing 10 L of  hand sanitizer is
7515 mL of isopropanol (99.8 %)
 417  mL of hydrogen peroxide (3 % )
 145  mL glycerol (98%)
123  mL distilled water (boiled and cooled water can also be used)

The alcohol is the main ingredient in the hand sanitizer which plays the role of the disinfectant. Hydrogen peroxide is added to kill bacteria that might have entered the storage bottles during the process of preparation. Glycerol is the emollient which softens and moisturizes the skin and protects it from the drying effect of the alcohol and hydrogen peroxide. The concentration of hydrogen peroxide we get might not necessarily be 3 %. Here we get 30 % hydrogen peroxide, so we have to accordingly reduce the amount of peroxide (as it is more concentrated) and dilute it with distilled water.

The following useful link gives a guide to local production of WHO-recommended Handrub formulation. It gives elaborate procedures with pictures for the preparation of hand sanitizers:

Test on Hand Sanitizers
As part of the course E-teaching with AKPCTA we had received an assignment to create an online assessment question link in our blog. So here is a link for assessment of your knowledge on hand sanitizers. Enjoy...

When the COVID -19 pandemic reached Kerala, the Department of Chemistry at Bishop Moore College jumped right into the Break The Chain campaign initiated by the Government of Kerala by providing hand sanitizers to everyone entering the campus. We inquired with the General Hospital in Mavelikara if they needed hand sanitizers and they were more than happy to hear this proposal. They forwarded to us the above WHO guidelines for the preparation of hand sanitizers and within a week we had prepared more than 40 L of hand sanitizer and distributed it to hospitals, police station and educational institutions in the neighborhood.

Welcome !!!

I was introduced to the world of blogging in 2009 by my good old friend Becky Schurman who had then recently started a blog named "A little less Volume". I was still a PhD student then at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada who found blogging really interesting and thought that someday I might blog too. And here I am eleven years later, in the midst of all the chaos of COVID 19, sitting at home, locked down for the past two months, ready to start my blog. Thanks to the All Kerala Private College Teachers Association (AKPCTA) for starting the course E- teaching with AKPCTA via the Telegram app to equip college teachers for online teaching. Today is Day-3 of this course which introduces the participants to Online Assessment- Digital Classrooms and Teacher Blogs. And today's assignment for us was to create a blog with educational content. So here is my educational blog.

Welcome to "The Chemistry Teacher" !!!

I will be using this blog to teach chemistry as well as to document my teaching journey. Believe me the life of a teacher is far more adventurous than anyone can imagine. This blog will also open a window into the life of a chemistry teacher. So sit back and enjoy the chemistry !!
